Lack of reciprocity reported in modeling study

( Understanding Subsalt Illumination through Raytrace Modeling, Muerdter, Kelly, and Ratcliff,
The Leading Edge, July 2001)

Is there a problem with reciprocity?

Short Answer:

  • No, Reciprocity rules!
  • Raytracing program contained bug, which is now fixed.
  • Raytracing same model with corrected code produces reciprocal results.
  • Very minor differences were found in rerunning other models presented in the 3-part paper on subsalt imaging. These small differences did not change any of the conclusions in the paper, except for the one questioning reciprocity.

Long Answer

Model and raypaths that produced non-reciprocal results using original software (Muerdter, et al. 2001).

Down-Dip raytrace modeling results (red diamonds) do not match up-dip amplitudes (open blue diamonds) when using old program containing bug. Roll cursor over figure to see results produced by corrected software.
