Lack of reciprocity reported in modeling study
( Understanding Subsalt Illumination through Raytrace Modeling, Muerdter, Kelly, and Ratcliff, The Leading Edge, July 2001)
Is there a problem with reciprocity?
Short Answer:
- No, Reciprocity rules!
- Raytracing program contained bug, which is now fixed.
- Raytracing same model with corrected code produces reciprocal results.
- Very minor differences were found in rerunning other models presented in the 3-part paper on subsalt imaging. These small differences did not change any of the conclusions in the paper, except for the one questioning reciprocity.

Model and raypaths that produced non-reciprocal results using original software (Muerdter, et al. 2001).
Down-Dip raytrace modeling results (red diamonds) do not match up-dip amplitudes (open blue diamonds) when using old program containing bug. Roll cursor over figure to see results produced by corrected software.
